OBJECTIVES:

1. Create a specialized center of Biological Sciences in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region by means of the development of the scientific research.

2. Preserve and protect the biological diversity of flora and fauna in ecosystems of the important areas of the station.

3. Guarantee the protection of the Micro-basin of the Pindo Grande River.

4. Actively participate with the community, students and public in general with environmental educational and training programs.

DESCRIPTION

The Pindo Mirador Biological Research Station is located in the upper Amazon Ecuadorian Region.  Its strategic location allows the mixture or habitats, climate microhabitats, ecological niche, and ecosystems in which species of flora and fauna are developed approximately in 300 hectares of native forest.  This could be possible because UTE has a leasing agreement with the Provincial Government of Pastaza.

UTE has a specific Research Center in the Amazon Cold Region and its activities are only dedicated to the output of new knowledge in the technological and scientific fields.  The results of flora and fauna that are obtained from this research allow local and national Government Institutions take advantage of them. For example, the identification of the wild flora that allows the Provincial Government of Pastaza to create an aggressive and massive plan or provincial reforestation.

RUNNING PLAN

The running plan of the Station consists:

    1. The Biological Area
    2. Environmental Area
    3. Environmental Educational Area

The Biological Area

It works on research projects of biotic component; the flora and fauna of the region, in which some of them can be mentioned:

  • Station flora diagnosis
  • Forest component research
  • Bird research
  • Amphibious and Reptile research
  • Mammal research
  • Insect and Invertebrate research.

Environmental Area

This area works in projects in coordination with the Provincial Government of Pastaza, like for example:

Forest Nursery

This project is developed in a strategic area of the Station, and it has as its main purpose the production of 300.000 forest, fruit, medicine and ornamental species. With this, it will guarantee vegetative material for the reforestation of the forestry areas or altered areas caused by anthropogenic activities.

Reforestation Project of the Micro-basin of the Pindo Grande River

This project takes place in the absorption areas, especially in the ones that had suffered from forestry. This project is also working with other micro-basins of the Province in different areas.

Furthermore, the students that assist to the speeches and workshops foster little trees that are planted in these areas.  Also they have the commitment of visiting and taking care of the tree.

Habitat Recuperation Project

This project took place in an altered area.  In this area fruit species were used in order to enrich the area.  As a result, they have a natural habitat for different species of wild life and at the same time, it attracts different groups of animals of the region.

Environmental Compensation Project

This project includes the participation of the community, associations and students.  In this project the Provincial Government of Pastaza gives plants to different people and under their technical advisory they plant them in their farms or institutions.

Environmental Education and Training Area

Under a well structured organization, training workshops, speeches and seminars are hold with students of different schools, high schools, local national and international universities.  With this process the children, young people, adults, tourists and the community have more sensibility and consciousness of the nature and by this, they create a living laboratory to solve the problem.

Services

The Biological Research Station also offers to the public in general, educational institutions, tourists and the community the following services:

Performing Center

This center exhibits all the samples and specimens of the research work that is carried out in the Station.

  • Environmental Education, Speeches, Workshops and Seminars.
  • Thesis and Work experience

The interested students can send an application form to the Station and the project that he or she would like to work with, to the following email address: cluzuriaga@ute.edu.ec

Botanic Garden and Arboretum

In this place the natural resources of the area are improved and developed giving them a better natural environment.  In this garden, there are some species of endemic flora.  For example, plants for specific uses like medicine plants which are really important and meaningful for the indigenous towns of the Amazon Region.

Water Gathering

The gathering of water is located in the Pindo Grande River.  This facilitates the water resource to the towns of Shell, Moravia and Puyo.  This micro-basin is protected by the forests of the Station and the correct management of it.

Ecological Paths

The forests of the Station are really important for this region.  These forests could be visited by the ecological paths. The visitors, students and tourists could admire and know all the beautiful places that these ecosystems have.  Also the sound of the insects, the singing of the birds, the sounds of the monkeys and the sound of the water make this place beautiful and unique.

Natural Viewpoints

These natural viewpoints are located in the higher lands of the region.  This allows the view of the animals, forests, the Pastaza River and other landscape attractions.

Walking by the River

Crossing the water and walking in between the stones allow the people to feel the nature and see the crags, caves and the big tress of the area.
